BURQA IN UAE THROUGH ITS HISTORY

Khaleejia said:
Since old days Burqa is a very important peice of khaleeji folklor dress. Usualy It has black color and women wear it over their faces and it looks like mask. The purpose for wearing burqa  is to hide face and show pride and high morality of the woman who wears it. Also burqa has been worn with purpose of embellishment. Burqa also can be met in other arab counties but different in shapes and names. In UAE this cover is called burqa, naqba, baqara, maqrun and in some other Gulf countries it is called al-butulah al-khaleejia.
ItalicParents put burqas on their daughters as soon as girls reach adult. And since a girl begins to wear burqa she is not allowed to go alone outside her house.
Burqas are also differ in shapes according to who wears it woman or girl. The difference is in its features that show status ot the woman is she young, adult, married or not. Burqa partly cover woman face the top of it must cover eyebrows and lower arch covers nostrils with upper lip while central vertical string should be exactly in the middle of her nose. From age 10 - 12 girls wear straight shape burqas but accessoried with a nice tracery that is usualy worn for fests. Girls are so excited to get their first burqa that once they get it they even sleep in it. In the morning a girl can find her face whiter then usual but after she put some kurkum on her face that gives a very nice color.

Burqas were also decorated with a rope made from sheep's wool. But nowadays more and more girls wear niqab instead of burqas as niqab is islamic modest dress but the problem that a lot of girls looking forward to nice designs forgetting the main meaning of niqab. and modern woman in niqab attracts even more by rich embroideries on it and bright eyes make-up as well. But in the past women also tried to make their burqas look nicer . they used oysters rubbing in the burqas to make appearance smoother and more shining. Also women used parfume and left burqas under the sun to dry that also gave more shining and light pleasant scent.

  2. I'm sure you can't buy the gold ones anywhere else but UAE because there is only a small handful of makers there as they aren't in high demand. So maybe if you know someone visiting there ask them to bring some for you, they're not expensive at all but they wear out so you have to keep replacing them :)

  5. I saw a woman wearing a UAE burqa yesterday while I was grocery shopping. I had never seen the UAE style before. Your blog was one of the most informative pages I have seen on this dress. Thank you!

  6. Hello! Thank you so much for your informative page on the burqa. I also saw one woman shopping with it a while ago and I was fascinated by it.
I still have some questions. In Western Europe (or at least in the Netherlands) the word burqa is employed to describe the black 'dress' to fully cover a woman. Are we wrong to call that a burqa? Do you know where this confusion stems from? Thank you!

  7. why cover the nose? i thought the purpose was to conceal a woman's beauty so that only her man could have access to that lovliness? i ask only because i wish to keep my wife's beauty concealed from my envious brother. i love them both.

  15. Is it true that once one starts wearing the burqa, she can't go out alone? I have seen photos of lone women (wearing burqa) herding sheep or riding horses.

  16. Burqa (Afganistan) is the garment that fully covers face and body of the woman in one single dress. The Niqaab (Saudi Arabia) is the veil, the accessory worn on top of the abaya to fully cover the face. All these pictures show what is called the Batula or Khaleeji burqa, which is a traditional garment pre-existent to Islam worn by mostly old women in the Gulf region Qatar-Oman-UAE. Traditions tells very interesting stories about how it was originated, none of them explained in this article. Regards!
